It's been a record year for forest fires in the US, specifically in Oregon. 2.3 million+ acres burned in 2026, and one of them reached the town over from my home. Thankfully, real life superheroes exist and put their lives on the line fighting these fires year after year.
Unfortunately, the federal government is currently run by supervillains. Not only have they lost the plot and defunded forest fire prevention (the Forest Service lost 1,400 qualified wildland firefighting personnel) but when a firefighter gets hurt out there, they’re completely abandoned by their employer (the government) with no help.
Thankfully, the Wildland Firefighter Foundation exists. They provide assistance to injured firefighters as well as the families left behind from those who who don't make it.
The land doth mourn, the sea doth grieve. How long until there's nothing left at all?
